Anabaena on rihmamaisten syanobakteerien suku, jota löytyy muun muassa Itämeren pintalauttojen kukinnoista.
Fotosynteesi on ollut olemassa elämän alusta lähtien. Kun maapallo syntyi Aurinkoa kiertäneestä pöly- ja kaasupilvestä noin 4,6 miljardia vuotta sitten, sen ilmakehässä ei ollut happea. Noin miljardi vuotta myöhemmin kehittyivät ensimmäiset sini- eli syanobakteerit, jotka alkoivat tuottaa happea yhteyttämällä. Sinilevät ovat täten maailman vanhimpia eliöitä. Yhteyttämisen eli fotosyteesin ansiota Maalle syntyi ilmakehä, joka mahdollisti ihmisen ja eläinkunnan synnyn.

Anabaena is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that can be found, among other things, in blooms on the surface rafts of the Baltic Sea.
Photosynthesis has existed since the beginning of life. When the Earth was born from a cloud of dust and gas orbiting the Sun about 4.6 billion years ago, there was no oxygen in its atmosphere. About a billion years later, the first blue or cyanobacteria developed, which began to produce oxygen by photosynthesis. Blue-green algae are therefore the world's oldest organisms. Thanks to fusion, or photosynthesis, an atmosphere was born on Earth, which made it possible for man and the animal kingdom to be born.
